Art Vs Crafts - A Debate With a New Twist

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Many say that “craft” is a technique, static, possibly a repeated pattern of steps to achieve an outcome. Let’s pick apart some examples and see what you think.

A leather worker takes repeated, learned, step to build and complete a saddle. During this process he must apply his craft of leather tooling skills to imprint flat rate data recovery saddle. In his mind he’s created a design using most likely a predetermined style method for his tooling. Once done, he’s completed a saddle which has been “crafted” by hand.

What about the leather tooling separate from the saddle base? It was designed, drawn and implemented by this craftsman using his imagination and acquired skills. Ultimately he has created a piece of “art”. Is he a craftsman or an artist? Could he be both?

If some describe crafts as a technique which has been in application for centuries then by all rights the leatherworker should be classified as a craftsman correct? But if “art” is a personal creative expression, what classification do we give his leather tooling? It can’t be both could it?

Let’s throw in a monkey wrench for fun. Suppose this saddle was the most beautiful, magnificent saddle anyone has seen. It’s put into a gallery for sale and purchased by someone knowing nothing about horses, or saddles nor wants to. Assumedly it was purchased as “art” to be displayed amongst his collection. The following week the owner of the saddle invites his friends over for cocktails and show off his new purchase. As friends view the saddle one says “…wow, you really have to appreciate that craft.” Another says ” Now that’s what I call a real piece of art”. Yet another says “…what the heck are you going to do with that?”

The ability of repairing jewelry is a craft. If a jeweler starts designing jewelry and applies techniques centuries old to his crafts to achieve an outstanding and notable design or style, is it still a craft or has the jeweler consolidate school loan an artist because the jeweler brought thought, expression and emotion to the piece while creating it?

A monkey splashes various paint colors onto a canvas. The monkey has a great sales person who takes this work to a gallery. It sells for thousands of dollars because it’s been presented as “art”. Come on, is this considered intent, emotion or expression or is this the greatest sales person you met? Please… don’t get me started on the monkey and his possible emotions.

If someone is able to sell what they produce or “crafted” does it make them an artist? Maybe.

The word “art” does hold a Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show more credibility than “craft”. We’ve all seen it while attending “craft shows” vs. “art” shows. Seems the “art” shows serve wine and cheese and demand higher end priced items. Craft shows are where granny sells her crocheted toilet paper roll covers, you know the one with the half Barbie doll on top of it? Or, where you see all those wooden country craft signs that say something cute and corny on them. Won’t find any of those at a “Art” show.

So where does the word “Artisan” come into this equation? According to the
Merriam Webster purchaser settlement structured an “Artisan” is defined as:

1: a worker who practices a trade or handicraft: craftsperson

2 : one that produces something (as cheese or wine) in limited quantities often using traditional methods

Ah oh, wine and cheese? Sounds like this belongs in the “art” category.

According to Wikipedia;

An artisan, also called a craftsman, is a skilled manual worker who uses tools and machinery in a particular craft.

I’m presuming assembly line workers can be called “artisans”? Let’s not forget “artisan” bread. Is baking bread a craft or an art? As much as I love it I’d say baking bread is an “art”.

Millicentrogers describes an Artisan as; “a person skilled in an art or craft.” This one I like, no bias shown here.

What’s my objective of this article? It’s done with the hopes that people start thinking differently. A craft maybe an expression of art. Being an artist, is a craft. You must have the ability to craft something to be an artist. The old cliché “Art is in the eye of the beholder” stands true. Whether you’re into crafting or you’re an artist, you are here to communicate your skills and hopefully someone will appreciate your creations.

The Secrets of Effective E-Commerce Design

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Those of you setting up an Iron Man shop you know the most important thing is converting your visitors into sales. This article should give you a few a tips on what to do with your site to improve your chances.

It is vital to remember that most people surfing the net for something have a short attention span and will probably not look at more than 3 or 4 car insurance rates comparison before they leave your site. So the most important thing is to make it as easy as possible for someone to get to checkout. As a good rule of thumb, there should be no more than 3 clicks from coming to your site to buying a product. The reason for this is it has been shown that the higher the number of clicks the lower the number of sales.

Most people coming to your site will be coming from a search engine and will probably not impotence pills at your home page but probably at the product page for the item they have been searching for. This means you need to make your site clear so they immediately know where they are and what choices they have.

Make sure you include a search box on your home page so if people do arrive there they on line car insurance easily look for what they want. You should also consider having one on all pages so that you keep it simple for someone looking for something specific.

Again for the ease of your customers keep your design and navigation as simple as possible. Think of big online shops like Amazon. There is nothing overly exciting in their design but it is easy to buy which is what makes them successful.

Always remember the content on your site. The more information you can provide on products the more this builds your credibility and thus the customer’s confidence in your site which in turn will result in more sales.

While on the point of credibility, you should consider the look and feel of your site. If you use a homemade website it can come across as amateur which will destroy a potential customer’s confidence in your company. If your site does not look professional, then most people will think that you cannot be trusted to buy products from. We would always recommend getting your site professionally designed to give it the professional look.

For the design of your site, never use frames. There are 2 reasons for this, firstly some computers are not compatible with frames and so will not allow people to view your site and so you immediately lose potential customers. Also search engines don’t index frames, so you will miss out on a lot of valuable traffic from people using search engines to find a product, and remember these are the people that are most likely to buy.

Keep the size of the pictures and graphics on your site to a minimum. If your page takes a long time to load, you may find people click off your site before it loads and so you will be losing potential customers only on the functionality of your site and not on your products.

Don’t have special software requirements on your site. If people have to download the software to access your site there is a high chance they won’t want to or just won’t be bothered to and so will never come to your site.

Check the links on your site on a regular basis as a broken link can be very off-putting to a potential customer. Remember to name your links so that people always know where they are and where they are going.

Use professional Houndcats hosting so that you can ensure your site will have as few problems as possible and be viewable 100% of the time. Remember to use a reliable e-commerce merchant account for payments so that you can ensure everything is secure and that all the payments go through, thus reducing problems for your customers.

Mom Demystifies Zest, Horseradish, Mustard and Other Odd Ingredients With Emergency Substitutions

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

During holiday season cooks are more likely to make recipes that have been in the family for ages. But this can also mean needing an ingredient you haven’t stocked in your kitchen for ages! Knowing an ingredients “equivalent” or substitution can save the day. The ingredients Mom talks about Quetiapine are mainly used as flavoring in casseroles, sauces and hot dips, so you have more flexibility in making substitutions.

Horseradish: Horseradish gives recipes donate cars kick. It is the secret ingredient in my grandmother’s crab dip. The taste is strong, sometimes described as tangy and hot. Sort of like very strong radishes. Fresh horseradish root is twice as strong as bottled. Prepared, or bottled horseradish is mixed with vinegar and other flavors. 1 tablespoon fresh horseradish ortho 2 tablespoons of bottled. Horseradish is also served alongside Prime Rib and other meats. You can also substitute 1 teaspoon of wasabe, or Japanese horseradish or a few drops of hot sauce. Keep in mind these substitutions are much hotter than horseradish so start with small amounts and Toikiayadt to taste.

Mustard: Mustard is another ingredient used in casseroles and dips to give recipes a kick. 1 teaspoon of dry mustard equals 1 tablespoon of prepared mustard. You can also start with 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard and add more, adjusting to taste. Before chilies and peppers arrived from the New World, Europeans used mustard and horseradish to spice up dishes. Try adding a few drops of hot sauce or a dash of chili pepper if you don’t have any mustard.

Paprika: Paprika is made from sweet, mild red peppers and has a light, delicate taste. Its bright red color is also makes it a popular garnish. If your recipe calls for a dash of paprika on top, it is probably there more for coloring than for flavor. My grandmother’s hot dip calls for a sprinkle of paprika after baking. You can substitute a dash of chili powder for color instead. Chili powder has a smokier taste and is stronger so utilize sparingly. Cayenne pepper is also red, but it is even hotter, so beware. Another option is to decorate the top of your creation with something else, like minced parsley.

Lemon Zest: If your cottage garden is out of Mainman at the moment, all is not lost. 1 teaspoon shredded lemon peel (zest) equals 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract or 2 tablespoons lemon juice. The juice of one lemon equals about 2-3 tablespoons. You can also substitute 3/4 cup lime juice for one cup of lemon juice. Or Substitute 1⁄2 cup vinegar for every cup of lemon juice.
